Automation Engine and Profile Store are designed to support XFINITY’s breadth of businesses including X1, xFi, and XFINITY Home.

The automation engine is a highly scalable event pattern matching system that listens in real time for noteworthy events and takes a customer defined action. (e.g., a door opening, kickoff at a football game, turn on a light, record a video clip). The Profile persistent store contains information that models real world relationships. Having this model allows Comcast to personalize experiences that are tailored to each customer.

Imagine the scale that’s required to listen to millions of events per day and then instantaneously take action for a particular event. To build such systems, the engineering team used:

Golang for its first-class treatment of concurrency, the ability to cross-compile, memory safety, structural typing, and simplicity
NodeRed to built a flow-based visual editor for non-programmer
Kafka as the central stateful message bus
NodeJS for its well-behaved asynchronous single threaded callback model, its built-in webserver, and rich developer community.
GraphQL as the interface for its ability to return the exact information to our clients in one call
Splunk for monitoring and dashboard creation
Public cloud infrastructure (VMs, ELBs, Caching)

The Applied AI group has a focus on Machine Learning /Deep learning using Spark-ml, H2o, Spark-ml, Tensorflow to improve the customer experience. Algorithms are mostly developed in Python or Scala/Java and have to deal with big data either on various kinds of data bases or on Kafka/Kinesis data streams feeding into a spark environment running either on our in-home clusters, GPUs or AWS/databricks.

The Advanced Products Group focuses on developing new user centric products and features:

We are using the latest Machine Learning technology to explore innovative sensor technology to track users health and wellness states. The team is using Tensorflow and H2O to build user behavior models, leveraging Spark, Hadoop, EMR for big data processing, building unique cloud features on AWS and creating engaging user experiences on iOS and Android mobile app

Three times per year, our engineers take on “Lab Week” projects to explore new technologies and new ideas—and present the results to the most senior management.
